PETALING JAYA: Malaysian golfer Gavin Kyle Green (pic) can savour another good outing in only his second year in the tough European Tour.
On Sunday, the 25-year-old claimed his second top-20 result in as many weeks by tying for 15th place at the British Masters.
Gavin carded a two-under 70 in the final round at the Hillside Golf Club in Southport to wrap up his outing on nine-under 279 – seven strokes behind winner Marcus Kinhult of Sweden.
Gavin had two birdies in his bogey-free score card and nearly repeated his top-10 finish in the tournament last year.
A tied 15th finish was still a brilliant result for Gavin, considering the dismal opening 74 on Thursday.
He responded strongly with a pair of 67 and 68 to place himself in the upper half of the leaderboard.
“A solid weekend I would say. I just kept placing the ball in the right places and did not take any unnecessary risk,” said Gavin.
“I wish I had made more putts but coming from missing the cut to barely making it and finishing tied 15th, I’ll take that any day.”
It was his third top-20 finish in 11 tournaments this season, having finished tied 11th at the Saudi International in February and tied 19th at the China Open on May 5.
Gavin picked up 44,553 (RM208,000) to take his season’s earnings on the European Tour to 210,315 (RM983,000).
More importantly, the result puts him on track to finish in the top-30 in the Race to Dubai standings, the Tour season-long competition. He’s currently ranked 75th.
A top-30 finish would also open up the door to many opportunities in the following season, especially entry into the big meets such as the Majors and World Golf Championships.
In his rookie season last year, Gavin did finished 84th to retain his Tour card.
A top-110 finish in the season-long competition also improved Gavin’s exemption status to Category 10 – meaning access to most of the Tour tournaments.
Gavin will be aiming to carry the fine momentum into the Made in Denmark championship in Farso, Denmark, from May 23-26.
