THE Selangor edition of Rural Sports (Sukan Luar Bandar) was held in Paya Jaras, Selangor, as part of the state government’s efforts to create a sporting culture and build a more healthy and energetic society.

The event held at the Paya Jaras Mini Stadium featured activities such as netball, penalty league, community sports (sukan rakyat), telematches, health check and a football match featuring former state and national footballers such as Datuk Santokh Singh.

Its approach was aimed at cultivating interest and attracting participation for sports at the grassroots level.

It was organised by the Selangor Youth and Sports Department in collaboration with the Selangor Youth Generation Development, Sports and Human Capital Development committee.

“The Rural Sports programme is an initiative under the Youth and Sports Ministry as a proactive measure towards making Malaysia a sporting nation,” said Paya Jaras assemblyman Mohd Khairuddin Othman, who is also Selangor exco for Youth Generation Development, Sports and Human Capital Development.

“The government’s effort to encourage a healthy and active lifestyle is important as the percentage of Malaysians who are active in sports is relatively low at 40%, compared to the 50% to 60% in developed countries.

“At the same time, a healthy and active lifestyle will help reduce the rate of chronic diseases such as diabetes and heart problems among Malaysians.”

Mohd Khairuddin added that the Rural Sports event also aimed to provide easier access to sports facilities among those in rural areas, highlight the potential of youth talents in sports and leadership as well as promote better health among the local community.
