A BAKERY is taking the initiative to distribute its unsold doughnuts to mosques and orphanages on a daily basis during Ramadan.

Its stall helper Mohd Ukhbah Bakar, 28, said the move was a way to reduce food wastage as hundreds of the doughnuts known as Donut Filling Ikhwan are made fresh daily for the Seberang Jaya Ramadan Bazaar near Butterworth, Penang.

“We try to sell as many doughnuts as possible at the bazaar but will end up with extra supply at times.

“The unsold doughnuts will then be given away,” he said.

Mohd Ukhbah said the doughnuts were made at a factory in Kodiang, Kedah.

“We have 16 flavours and the doughnuts are priced at RM1.50 each.

“For our premium flavours such as cheese and tiramisu, the doughnuts are priced at RM2 each."

Nearby at the bazaar, a stall selling pasta was another crowd-puller for its Kuih Kerbau Guling.

Stall owner Zieha Selehon, 40, said the kuih was made by a supplier, who is a Kelantanese.

“It is similar to kuih kosui (steamed rice puddings) but without lime powder.

“You will usually see this kuih being sold in east coast states,” she said, adding that response towards the kuih had been positive.

Meanwhile, former human resource executive Siti Fatimah Mydin Pitchay, 45, was spotted selling Nasi Bakar Sambal Puaka at her Dapur Mami Siti stall.

“I enjoy cooking and I learned this recipe from my Indonesian helper.

“I hope to bring something unique to the bazaar,” she said.

The Seberang Jaya Ramadan Bazaar is located along Lorong Tenggiri 23 in Seberang Jaya, Butterworth.
